Although the date of its construction is not known exactly, it seems almost certain that it was carried out in the 16th century. His style is Renaissance and quite possibly its author is Andrés de Vandelvira, since many of his elements can be recognized in well-known temples of his authorship located in Úbeda. The cover of the facade that looks towards the street of La Hoz is an almost exact replica of the one that can be admired in the Church of San Miguel de Jaén.

As for who ordered its construction, it is doubted whether the offer was paid by the Episcopal Church of Toledo or by the Marquises of Camarasa, who were advanced at that time.

It is built on the Cerezuelo River, which forced it to be channeled previously, which enters a large vault under the main altar, crossing the entire church, to continue its course under the Plaza de Santa María. It is very likely that the temple did not come to a complete conclusion and that the serious damage caused by the terrible storm and flood of 1694 contributed to further hinder the chances of ending it.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=»1_2″][et_pb_image admin_label=»Imagen» src=»http://cazorla.es/turismo/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/ruinassantamaria.jpg» show_in_lightbox=»off» url_new_window=»off» use_overlay=»off» animation=»left» sticky=»off» align=»left» force_fullwidth=»off» always_center_on_mobile=»on» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid»]

[/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=»Fila»][et_pb_column type=»1_2″][et_pb_image admin_label=»Imagen» src=»http://cazorla.es/turismo/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/ruinasantademaria.jpg» show_in_lightbox=»off» url_new_window=»off» use_overlay=»off» animation=»left» sticky=»off» align=»left» force_fullwidth=»off» always_center_on_mobile=»on» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid»]

[/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=»1_2″][et_pb_text admin_label=»Texto» background_layout=»light» text_orientation=»left» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid»]

Origin:

The church in its origin, of floor plan, Ruins of Santa Maria.
